Seminar on Mediation for Judges from Qatar

The Seminar started with an introductory lecture on the U.S. legal and court system by Dr. James G. Apple, President of the Academy, at the International Judicial Academy Training Center. Afterwards the delegation heard a presentation on mediation process and role of mediatorby Senior Judge Richard Levie, Superior Court of the District of Columbia.

During the second day of the seminar, the group was briefed about mediation/mediator process and preparation for the mediation by Christopher McMurray, Esq., an experienced private mediator. In the afternoon, Rachel Wohl Esq., Director, Maryland Mediation and Conflict Resolution Office, outlined how to establish a court-annexed mediation program and center. The delegation heard also a presentation by Susan Green, Esq., on mediation in cultural contexts and uses of technology in the mediation process.

On the third day, the group visited the Mediation Center of the Superior Court of the District of Columbia. Here, the group observed a mediation, and heard a presentation about the mediation process by Ms. Karen Leichtnam, ADR Training Manager, Multi Door Dispute Resolution Center. Later, the judges visited the the United States District Court and the U.S. Court of Appeals, District of Columbia, and heard a presentation about mediation services by court mediators from District Court and Court of Appeals.

On the forth day, the judges visited the United States Supreme Court and met with Hon. Scott Harris, Chief Clerk of the Supreme Court. Later, they were briefed by James Buchanan, Senior Training Officer, about trainer programs and setting up a training program at Federal Judicial Center.

On the final day, at the group observed a mock mediation led by Susan Green Esq. at the International Judicial Academy Training Center. In addition, the delegation was briefed with lectures about special issues relating to mediation by Christopher McMurray and by Stephen Altman, both experienced mediators. The seminar concluded with the closing ceremony and the presentation of the certificates.
