Seminar on the Civil Justice System in the United States for Judges and Prosecutors from Brazil

The Seminar started with an introductory lecture on the U.S. legal and court system by Dr. James G. Apple, President of the Academy. Afterwards the delegation visited the Supreme Court of the U.S., where they met Chief Clerk Scott Harris.

During the second day of the seminar, the group visited the Federal Judicial Center and was briefed about the judicial and court staff education by Judge Jeremy Fogel, Director of the Federal Judicial Center. In addition, they heard a lecture about issues involving court administration by Tim Bole, Attorney-Advisor, Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts. Afterwards, the group visited the Law Library of Congress and Dr. Eduardo Soares, Senior Legal Research Specialist, gave a presentation about the global legal research program and led the group for a tour of the Library or Congress.

On the third day, the group visited the Greenbelt Division of the U.S. District Court in Maryland and heard various presentations about criminal proceedings and the role of magistrate judges, court personnel, and law clerks in the federal judicial system . The visit and the discussion were led by Senior U.S. District Judge Peter Messitte.

The Program also featured lectures and presentations on mediation and alternative dispute resolution at American University Washington College of Law by Ms. Karen Leichtnam, ADR Training Manager, Steve Altman Esq., a private mediator, and Ms. Donna Stienstra, Senior Research Specialist, Federal Judicial Center.

On the final day, at the American University Washington College of Law the group was briefed with lectures about the health care system in Brazil and in the United States. The seminar concluded the closing ceremony and the presentation of the certificates.
