Seminar on arbitration and mediation for Judges and Justice administrators from Brazil

The Seminar started with an introductory lecture on the U.S. legal and court system by Dr. James G. Apple, President of the Academy. The Program featured lectures and presentations on international commercial arbitration at American University Washington College of Law by professor George Bermann and professor Horacio Grigera Naón. At the IJA headquarters, the group was briefed about mediation in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia and observed a mock mediation led by Senior Judge Richard Levie, and Ms. Karen Leichtnam, ADR Training Manager. In addition, Ms. Eileen Hoffman, Commissioner of the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service, briefed the group about the various interventions and activities Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service of the U.S. government.

Afterwards, the delegation observed oral arguments in U. S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, and attended a presentation on mediation procedures in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit by Ms. Amy Wind, Circuit Mediator. Later, the group visited the U. S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit and the Supreme Court of the U.S., where they met the Chief Clerk Scott Harris.

The group also heard various presentations on court annexed mediation, alternative dispute resolution, and private mediation in family law cases at the Greenbelt Division of the U.S. District Court in Maryland led by Judge Peter Messitte. The seminar concluded at the American University Washington College of Law with the closing ceremony and the presentation of the certificates.
