Brazilian Judges Seminar on Social Security Issues

 On the first day, the group heard various lectures describing U.S. and Brazilian Social Security Systems in comparison with other systems around the world. In the evening, the delegation was hosted by the Brazilian Ambassador to the U.S. with a reception at the Brazilian Embassy. On the second day, the group was briefed about the U.S. social security disability process by Judge Frank Cristaudo from the Social Security Administration and later heard the perspective of Michael Steinhardt, a practicing lawyer specializing in Social Security claims. On the third day, the group visited the Greenbelt Division of the U.S. District Court in Maryland and heard various presentations about the judicial review of social security disability claims led and moderated by Senior U.S. District Judge Peter Messitte, Magistrate Judges Jillyn Schulze and Stephanie Gallagher. On their fourth day, the group learned about the Pension Benefits Guarantee Corporation, and heard various presentations on pension plans in Brazil. On Friday, the delegation was briefed on Social Security retirement policy and survivor benefits. The seminar concluded with a presentation on current and future issues in the U.S. Social Security System by a member staff of the U.S, House of Representatives, Kim Hildred. Certificates were awarded to each of the participants at the closing ceremonies that day.
